FREE MICROSCOPY WORKSHOP
Ziess 510 Confocal Training

Description:
Introduction to confocal microscopy using the Zeiss 510 system.  This workshop is suitable for beginners and users of other systems who want to be cross—trained to also be able to use the Zeiss.

The first half of the workshop will be a Powerpoint presentation in Keen Hall 2018, followed by hands—on training in Keen 1004.  If demand is high, hands—on may be split into groups throughout the afternoon.

FREE Monthly One—day Proteomics Workshop

This free monthly one—day workshop is available to students, postdocs, technicians and faculty members who want to use the resources of the Noel T. Keen Hall W. M. Keck Proteomics Facility in their research. Training includes a general lecture, an operational demonstration and time for individual practice on the equipment. Trainees will gain operational skills in using the MALDI—MS/MS and database—dependent tools to study cellular proteins with both PMF and MS/MS analyses of proteolytic peptides. Trainees will be able to use their newly acquired MS skills to identify proteins from a variety of systems including mammalia, plants, insects, and yeast. In addition to the usage in protein identification, the Q—STAR system can also be a choice for studies of protein complexes, protein modifications, and protein—protein interactions. This workshop is intended to help trainees become independent experimentalists using the proteomics approach.

Description:
The objective of the meeting is to highlight recent advances in research on mobile genetic elements and their applications in genetics and biotechnology. The program includes functional and genetic studies on transposable elements. The conference will allow scientists from these interrelated fields to share information about exciting new findings, outstanding questions and promising applications. Sessions will include mechanism and regulation of transposition; host—transposon interactions; transposons as molecular tools for gene discovery using insertional mutagenesis and therapeutic transgene delivery for possible human applications.

In the previous years, the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Transposon Research (Minnesota, USA) organized the meeting with approximately 100 registrants from around the world. Conference participants included cancer biologists, stem cell scientists, gene therapists, developmental biologists, and molecular geneticists.

Encouraged by the organizers of the previous successful conferences, this meeting is being brought to Europe, thus providing an excellent opportunity for European scientists of the field to participate. This conference is unique in its main focus being to explore opportunities of using transposons as molecular tools. The goal is to serve as a key forum for information exchange and development of transposon tools for new genetic applications from functional genomics to molecular medicine.
