Research Summary:

Dr. Maslov's research of the mitochondrial gene expression includes the aspects of molecular biology, evolution and parasitology. The objects of study, kinetoplastid protozoa, are known to cause serious diseases in tropics. These organisms demonstrate a unique organization of kinetoplast-mitochondrial DNA and a highly unusual process of post-transcriptional RNA processing, termed RNA editing. The main challenge is to understand the functional importance of this system and the details of gene expression and regulation. The ongoing research is performed using model non-pathogenic organisms and involves characterization of the de novo mitochondrial protein synthesis, search for the proteins derived from edited mRNAs, isolation of mitoribosomes and factors which regulate translation. Another direction of research is aimed at understanding the evolution of kinetoplast DNA and the origin of RNA editing. These studies include molecular phylogenetic analysis of kinetoplastid and related protozoa and analysis of RNA editing and mitochondrial genomic organization in different lineages.
