Research Summary:

The core question underlying my research interests is how signaling between organs or cells orchestrates coordinated growth and development.

Across biological systems, cell polarity is a fundamental mechanism to establish specific plasma membrane domains that are essential for cell fate and function. In plants, polarly localized proteins have roles in plant defense, transport of hormones and nutrients, cell morphogenesis, and asymmetric cell division. Asymmetric or formative cell division is a crucial mechanism to generate the distinct cell types necessary for stem cell renewal and organ patterning. Extrinsic (non-cell-autonomous) cues are predicted to be key determinants of asymmetric cell divisions and cell fate acquisition, yet our understanding of these signaling pathways remains limited. Research in the Van Norman lab, integrates plant developmental biology, systems theory, live cell imaging, and intercellular signaling to investigate the role of cell polarity in root development and tissue patterning.
