Research Summary:

The Walling laboratory is dissecting the mechanisms used to perceive and control phloem-feeding whiteflies in alfalfa, cassava and Arabidopsis. We are currently focused on identifying the genes that underlie the alfalfa and cassava loci that confer resistance to whiteflies. These whitefly-resistant genotypes kill developing whitefly nymphs and is an important mechanism of control that if harnessed could revolutionize control of these invasive and destructive pests.  In addition, the laboratory studies the role of tomato’s leucine aminopeptidase (LAP-A) in defense signaling. LAP-A is a plastid-localized protein with both aminopeptidase and chaperone activities. LAP-A controls a chloroplast-derived signal that regulates nuclear gene expression (retrograde signaling). The Walling lab uses the tools of molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, genomics, bioinformatics and proteomics.
