In September 2009, nine UCR departments and over 200 faculty, graduate students, and academic and post-doctoral researchers moved into the new Genomics Building, home of the Institute for Integrative Genome Biology. The building is uniquely constructed as the first on campus with an open lab and office design to stimulate interactivity and creativity among members of different research groups. Research is defined by the use of modern genetic tools, genomics and bioinformatics to help address basic and applied questions in the plant, insect, and fungal sciences. The addition of a 100-seat multimedia auditorium with a state-of-the-art audio system, laptop outlets and audience microphones located adjacent to the beautiful garden-like plaza and main lobby is quickly becoming a major venue for national conferences, distinguished lectures, and important campus events. In addition to a bioinformatics suite and training center, research laboratories are supported by several instrumentation facilities, such as specialized insectaries and growth chambers.

The building features the exterior and interior artwork of UCR Art Professor and Chair, Jim Isermann, consisting of 80 illuminated folded metal panels for the covered walkway and atrium.

Please view YouTube  to hear IIGB Director Natasha Raikhel discuss how the new Genomics building will add to the infrastructure at UCR necessary for continued interdisciplinary research.
