Research Summary:
Soils that inhibit plant pests or disease are termed suppressive soils. Understanding how such soils function is the primary focus of our research program. Towards this goal, we have developed new rRNA-gene-based methods and experimental approaches to identify microorganisms involved in these phenomena. Utilization of these methods has led to the identification of a fungus (Dactylella oviparasitica) that can suppress the sugarbeet cyst nematode (Heterodera schachtii). We are currently attempting to understand the key interactions among the fungus, nematode and host crop that lead to the development of this suppressiveness. We are also examining soils that suppress root knot nematodes and that cause replant suppression of peach.
